Context: I was at my local Walmart, and as I was walking out to my car, I heard a loud bang. I thought the guy driving the forklift near the garden center had dropped what he was carrying. Then I look over and see smoke billowing out the front of a 1st gen Focus parked under the ass-end of a 12th gen F-150 on the main road next to the parking lot. I go over there to see if everyone is ok, but there is already a group of people tending to the elderly lady in the Focus and putting out the fire that started under the hood. HOLY SHIT she slammed into the back of that truck. The speed limit is 45 and there is heavy traffic on that stretch of road during peak times, especially Saturdays at noonish. Speaking with people who witnessed, they said she was still accelerating when she hit the truck, who i’m assuming was pretty much at a standstill. She hit so hard, the front left corner of her car was about pushed back to the firewall and shortened the bed of the truck a good 2 inches. From the little bit of conversation I heard between the lady and the people making sure she was ok, she had no idea what had happened.

There was also a woman who was saw what happened from the parking lot, who happened to be, estimated at late 50s, state that while she is getting toward that age, she felt that at a certain age you need to be retested for your license.

A simple driving test perhaps every other license renewal would take care of a lot of this, without age discrimination. Unfortunately it will probably never happen because many people who vote, and those who make laws, are up around that age where things start getting sketchy. Nobody wants to admit that it’s time to give up their freedom to drive.

They should make everybody take the driving test every few years. It’s not just old people who can’t drive worth a rats ass.

^This. I’ve seen 2 fatal motorcycle accidents caused by old ladies who just pulled out into traffic, causing a motorcyclist to T-Bone their car. They, “never saw the motorcycle”. Absolutely senseless. All they got was a citation as far as I know. They didn’t mean to kill someone, but it’s time to re-evaluate their driving abilities.

Eh, I know plenty of 20 somethings who should not be able to drive. I also know a 74 year old who kicks ass and takes names in a 600hp C6, at track days no less. People of all ages can’t drive, there needs to be better initial driver education and regular re-testing for all ages. I took my road test at 14, and haven’t had one since.

Look and see as you pass by, as you are now, so once was I. As I am now, so you shall be, prepare for death, and follow me.

Exactly regular testing for all. There are many people driving around like idiots. I feel like just like everything else in the world evolves so do roads , cars and driving. As many cities start focusing on pedestrians instead of cars, the way roads are designed has changed and the tests should reflect that.

Well some places are less lazy with keeping drivers up to the task of driving than others.

Where I live its really non-existent. US drivers would rather get angry than say “yeah I’ll take even a free course”.
